Hello-

I'm Yvette. A student studying at John Cabot Academy Sixth Form and over the next few months I will be giving you an insight into one of my projects for Media Studies. I'll be frequently posting on this page to keep you updated. My project is to make a 2 minute film opening clip. In order to do this I will have to research and develop into ideas and aquire new skills to the best of my ability.

Evaluation- Who would be attracted to watch the clip and how does it attract social groups?

Many horror films are certificate 15 upwards, by making our main character in this age band it makes the audience want to watch it more rather than the characters be old, as its not something they can relate to. Although in a horror, it is quite unrealistic and unlikely to happen in real life, there is still something more on edge watching someone who is the same age on screen.  We conducted a poll and found out that people in this age gap mostly liked horror and pyschological thrillers. This is why we knew that the genre would work for us. At this age many groups are a mixed gender this is how it would attract both boys and girls. Therefore the audience would be ages 15 onwards, its not actually bloody more jumpy which is why its better than being an 18. At this age it also would attract more viewers, as seeing a horror film in the cinema is a regular thing to do. Many films that are similar such as 'paranormal activity 1/2' and 'the devil inside' were shown popular at box office and they were produced with the same kind of techonology and likewise didn't include too many characters. This indicates that they focused more on sound and effects which is what we've done. Therefore our textual analysis proved a big help.
Stereotypically girls are more under harm rather than boys. Therefore we've done it so its a girl being followed by a bloke except you cant see his facial expression. Therefore it represents girls as being a little slow and as if they often put them self under risks. Although the task was to only make a 2 minute opening clip it would be better if the audience could imagine something happening from that point on. It doesn’t particularly show a certain social group however it fits the stereotype of a girl trying to be more independent by walking home alone and the 'killer' a dark and mysterious man. We purposely modernise it by using texts instead of a phone call (like in the film scream, which was our biggest influence). Although this isn't what always happens this is what we perceived to be a regular convention of a horror =Dark/mysterious guy kills innocent/sweet girl.
